Chapter Six

Fletcher moved his body and stretched his arms. With his hands he felt the hard surface of timber boards under his body. He opened his eyes and saw the dark, uneven surface of the ceiling above him. Simultaneously, his head and stomach registered their protest. He closed his eyes. His head throbbed, pounded, and his stomach became twisted with pain. The pain subsided and he put his hand to his head and felt a bandage. Who had done that? he wondered. He ran his hand over his face and felt the stubble of a beard. He recalled being dragged into a room with Kaddir and Wilson, but it seemed a long time ago. How long had he been unconscious? Where was he now? He opened his eyes again and forced them to remain open. He saw the roof above him formed of stone slabs and roughly-hewn timbers. He dragged himself into a seated position and breathed heavily to stop his stomach from rebelling. He was in a room of about twelve feet square and the same height. It had bare stone walls and an earthen floor. Narrow openings where the room met the walls served both as a means of ventilation and for lighting purposes. There was a single, heavy wooden door, with no handle or furniture. He was lying on a wooden bunk. But where was he and how long had he been there? He looked at his clothing. His jacket had been taken from him. He was in his shirt and slacks, and they looked grubby as if he had been travelling steerage. Again he ran his hand over his stubble. It was a two-day growth, he thought. What had he been doing? His mouth felt parched with a sickly taste. He had been drugged, he thought. For two days he had been kept in a state of semi-consciousness by drugs. He moved his legs off the bunk and tried to stand up. His legs felt heavy and he ached in every limb. He sat down again. He had a vague impression of someone pommelling him with blows to the body, and realized it was not something he had imagined. But where had they brought him? The room was stifling hot. Was he still in Greece? He looked around the room and saw nothing which helped to tell him where he was. He glanced at the openings in the wall and saw only a clear blue sky. His stomach rebelled again and he lay back on his bunk. Why had Kaddir kept him alive? he wondered. Why had he not disposed of him as he had said to Wilson?

After a while the pain in his stomach subsided and he was able to stand up and walk about. At least he was alive, he thought, and one of Nico’s men would have been watching the bungalow. Nico and Toni would know who to contact. But where was he? Where had they taken him?

He thought about Wilson who was flying to Baghdad to arrange a shipment of supplies for the American party.
